A Gallup Poll shows that almost two-thirds of Americans believe there is palpable bias in the media. This is no surprise to me, having written a book “Bias in the Media”.
With the exception of Fox, most network and cable news outlets lean left.
The liberal agenda is promoted by stacking cable debates with Democratic sympathizers, as well as by determining what is covered, and how it’s presented from the teleprompter.
But the left’s media infiltration goes well beyond the newsroom. When you look at all the special segments, or news derived from even sports (ESPN) or entertainment venues (such as HBO), liberals rule.
While our nation is almost evenly split down the middle ideologically, you would think conservatives are an extreme fringe, given the remarkably small number of shows that present a conservative perspective.
Examine, for instance, most of the late-night talk shows. CBS’ Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel on ABC, are unapologetic leftists. The old days of Johnny Carson and Jay Leno being equal opportunity offenders are gone.
Even the post-midnight shows such as Seth Meyers’, build their monologues around ridiculing Republicans.
Comedy Central went from John Stewart’s sarcastic liberalism to Trevor Noah’s snarky attacks on mid-America. This shouldn’t be surprising given his earlier anti-semitic tweets didn’t prohibit him from getting the gig in the first place.
Then there is TBS’ Samantha Bee. Let’s not even go there!
Would conservative comedians Dennis Miller or Adam Carolla today get a dream job of being a late night host on Comedy Central? Don’t hold your breath.
Even CNN’s popular decade review shows are chock-full of liberal bias.
Take, for instance, the criminal justice segment on the series: “The Nineties.”
The narrative was propelled by various liberal talking heads, including rappers, the Rev. Al Sharpton, radical university elites and the Hollywood gang. Together, they spouted talking points about how the war on crime, begun in the 1990s, was actually a war on the black community.
You didn’t see many conservative pundits noting how the war on violent crime was a fantastic success, mitigating the number of murders nationwide dramatically, including a tenfold reduction in New York.
This was followed by the CNN series, “American Jail,” which painted America as a racist nation putting millions of innocent black men behind bars.
There was hardly a mention that blacks being involved in more police stops could be explained by the fact that they are perpetrating a proportionally higher percentage of overall crime.
CNN must believe that focusing on racial tensions spikes ratings, because they seem somewhat obsessed on the issue. The “Black in America” series focused on the struggles of African Americans in a nation still viewed as regressive.
There was little to no conversation about how inequality within the African American community actually expanded under the Obama years, or how our nation, supposedly so drenched in racism, could have twice elected an African-American president.
Once the “Black in America” series ran its course, CNN followed up by giving comedian, Kamau Bell, a platform through his series, “United Shades of America,” to give the appearance that the U.S. is experiencing a new wave of KKK atrocities.
One hundred years ago there were 4 million members in the KKK. Today that figure is about 4000. Yet, Bell’s series would make one believe that there is an uncontrollable surge of these bigots ushering in a new era of Jim Crow laws.
But race is not the only liberal cause focused on by these outlets.
The extremist greens received a CNN slot called “Trump Versus the Wild”.
Moderator Bill Weir sounded the alarm that the new administration’s policy will accede to the wishes of many locals seeking approval for oil and gas extraction in 800,000 Alaskan acres.
The segment made it appear this would wipe out the ecological balance of the region and kill off the polar bear. Sounds like a huge swath of land, but Weir omitted the fact that Alaska owns over 101 million acres.
I’m still waiting for the documentary about how much stronger our nation is economically, and from a security perspective, due to our energy independence. Or how much more wealth was put into the hands of our working class residents as a result of lower gasoline and heating bills.
Not only does HBO air Bill Maher’s entertaining Republican basher, “Real Time,” they made room for the Maher produced weekly news show, “VICE,” a “60 Minutes” type program, whose segments are almost all left leaning.
Typical topics include: global warming, trans rights and police brutality. Do you think that HBO will be providing Ben Shapiro or Jonah Goldberg their own weekly series to espouse conservative views?
A more recent documentary peddled on CNN is the slobbering love fest over sitting Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader-Ginsburg. Normally, we would wait for the subject to be 6 feet under before dialing up such hero worship.
Upon his death a few years ago, conservative justice, Antonin Scalia, recognized by many scholars as far more consequential than Ginsburg, received no such lavish reflection. Neither did the recently retired moderate, Anthony Kennedy, whose swing vote status was also for more influential than Ginsburg’s predictable liberal positions.
There’s a place for all these liberal shows. Too bad there seems to be no room for programing from the perspective of the other half of America.
Steve Levy, former New York state assemblyman, Suffolk County executive, and candidate for governor, is now a distinguished political pundit. Levy’s commentary has been published in such media outlets as Washington Times, Washington Examiner, New York Post, Albany Times, Long Island Business News, and City & State Magazine. He hosted “The Steve Levy Radio Show” on Long Island News Radio, and is a frequent guest on high profile television and radio outlets. Few on the political scene possess Levy’s diverse background. He’s been both a legislator and executive, and served on both the state and local levels — as both a Democrat and Republican. Levy published Bias in the Media, an analysis of his own experience, after switching parties, with the media’s leftward slant. Levy is currently Executive Director of the Center for Cost Effective Government, a fiscally conservative think tank. He is also President of Common Sense Strategies, a political consulting firm.
